Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has said that he is not surprised with Rohit Sharma replacing Virat Kohli as One Day Internationals captain as he feels “it was on the cards”.

Rohit Sharma has been officially appointed as the new One Day Internationals captain of the India National Cricket Team, recently he was appointed as the new T20I captain of the team as well. So, now India will also follow spilt captaincy and Rohit will lead India in white-ball cricket and he will be deputy of Kohli in red-ball cricket.

“Speaking on his YouTube channel Salman Butt gave his opinions on this matter and said that giving Rohit only T20I captaincy would make no sense and the spilt captaincy should be between red-ball and white-ball cricket.

“This doesn’t come as a surprise to me. It was on the cards. It doesn’t make sense anyway if he’s only the T20I captain. It makes sense to segregate between white between red ball and white ball to reduce the pressure on a certain player.”

He added that India doesn’t play many T20Is and to reduce workload off Kohli the entire white-ball captaincy has to be handed over to another person. He said:

” India doesn’t not play a lot T20Is; they mainly play ODIs and Tests. In order to reduce workload (off Kohli), the entire white-ball captaincy had to go one way,”

It’s A Good Thing Because You Will See Virat Kohli’s Performance Getting Better Because He Was Extremely Overloaded – Salman Butt

Butt feels Virat Kohli was overburdened with captaincy pressure and with pressure getting off his performance might get better. He said:

“Like I said, there is no element of surprise here. It’s a good thing because you will see Virat Kohli’s performance getting better because he was extremely overloaded. And as it is, the volume of cricket that India plays is very high.”

Butt further added that Rohit was the perfect replacement for Virat. He said:

“The pressure is even higher when all eyes are on him and people only talk about him not scoring runs. For people, him scoring 50s did not amount to anything. I reckon this was a perfect exchange with Rohit Sharma.”
