India crushed Pakistan by 61 runs in a high-voltage T20 World Cup 2026 match in Colombo. After the thrilling win on Sunday, February 15, the young Indian star Tilak Varma has opened up about how Ishan Kishan didn’t let him make use of the powerplay against Pakistan.
Tilak Varma’s playful jealousy over Ishan Kishan
Tilak Varma couldn’t hide his playful jealousy over teammate Ishan Kishan’s fireworks against the Men in Green in Colombo. While Kishan smashed the ball all around the park, the left-handed sensation joked about barely getting a chance to face deliveries in the powerplay.
After Indian opener Abhishek Sharma fell for a duck, the Bihar lad entertained the crowd with his hitting. The left-handed batter launched one huge six after another and reached his fifty in just 27 balls. By the time Saim Ayub got him out for 77 from 40 balls, India had already raced to 88 for 1 in the ninth over. Tilak and Ishan added 87 runs off just 46 balls for the second wicket.
Later, Tilak Varma (25) and captain Suryakumar Yadav (32) steadied the ship, with Shivam Dube’s 27 pushing India’s total to 175/7 in their 20 overs. Chasing the target, Pakistan was bundled out for just 114 runs inside 18 overs, allowing India to extend their dominance in this rivalry.
Strike hee nahin mila powerplay mein: Tilak Varma
Following the comprehensive victory, Tilak opens up about his playful banter with Ishan during their partnership. However, Tilak was ready to rotate the strike and keep the innings steady from the other if the wicketkeeper-batter would have fallen early in Colombo.
Tilak Varma told Parthiv Patel in a post-match show, “Powerplay pe thoda better aa raha tha bat pe. Phir bhi, the way Ishan has batted, dusre end se mujhe bhi laga, strike hee nahin mila powerplay mein. Toh mujhe bhi laga maar raha hai toh accha hee hai team ke liye. Main bola, 'Bhai tu lagaate reh.' Agar wicket gira dusre end pe, main sambhalta hoon. Rotate karunga.'

(The ball was coming onto the bat better in the power play. But the way Ishan batted, it seemed like he was batting on a different pitch, and I didn't get a strike in the powerplay. I thought it's good for the team if he keeps hitting. I told him, 'Keep hitting; if the wicket falls at the other end, I'll take care of it and rotate strike.')”
Ishan Kishan opens up about his knock vs Pakistan
Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan’s innings was all about smart cricket. He used his strength, watched the ball closely, and targeted gaps on the field to score quickly, giving India a strong platform against their arch-rivals Pakistan in their T20 World Cup 2026 match.
Kishan said, “The wicket was not that easy. Sometimes, you just have to believe and focus on your strengths. I was just watching the ball, sticking to my strengths, and making them run as much as possible.”
