Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar recalled the 3rd Test match of the India tour of England 2002, which was played at the Headingley, Leeds, and said it was fun to watch the duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly treat the England bowling unit like “schoolboys”.

The batting pair of Tendulkar and Ganguly is the most successful in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket as they have scored 8227 runs in partnership, including 26-century partnerships and 29 half-century partnerships.

Tendulkar and Ganguly were able to add 249 runs together for India in the 3rd Test of the India tour of England 2002 at the Headingley, Leeds.

Tendulkar scored 193 runs off 330 balls and Ganguly scored 128 runs off 167 balls also Rahul Dravid scored 148 runs off 307 balls to help India score 628/8d under overcast skies. This was the only instance of the big 3 of Indian cricket – Dravid, Tendulkar, and Ganguly – scoring centuries in the same innings of a Test match.

Notably, the Indian batters destroyed the English bowling unit in the match as 4 England bowlers – Matthew Hoggard, Alex Tudor, Andrew Caddick, and Ashley Giles – conceded over 100 runs.

While talking about the Leeds Test, Gavaskar said that Tendulkar and Ganguly were batting against the English bowling unit as if they were playing an ODI game.

“To be able to see that Indian batting duo of Tendulkar and Ganguly toy with the England bowling as if they were schoolboys, was fun to watch.

“When the declaration was being thought of, Sachin and Sourav were batting as if it was a one-day game,” former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said on the docu-series ‘Architects in White’ streaming on SONY LIV.
