Australia National Cricket Team captain Mitchell Marsh has opened up about their top-order plans for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 ahead of their three-match T20I series against South Africa, starting on August 10 at the Marrara Oval in Darwin.
Australia has locked in Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head as their go-to opening pair until the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. After whitewashing the West Indies 5-0 last month, the Kangaroos are now aiming to outshine South Africa at home.
Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head locked in as Australia’s opening pair in T20Is
Travis Head, who is currently the world’s No. 2 T20I batter, will reunite with his captain Marsh at the top as they prepare to face South Africa in the first T20I on Sunday in Darwin.
Marsh was quoted as saying by ICC: “It'll be myself and Heady [Travis Head] up the top for the foreseeable future. Obviously, we've played a lot together, (we've) got a great relationship, so (we'll) start there.”

However, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head haven’t opened together in T20Is yet, but they have already impressed in ODIs as the opening pair, scoring 282 runs in just five innings at an average of 70.50. Overall, Marsh and Head added 504 runs in 14 innings across formats, including one century and three fifties as Australia’s opening pair.
Australia opts to stick with Mitchell Marsh as T20I opener
Marsh, who moved to No. 3 during the 2021 T20 World Cup, played a key role in Australia’s title win, and he was even named Player of the Match in the Final. In the 2024 edition, the star all-rounder led the side but couldn’t take them past the Super Eights, scoring 125 runs in seven games.
Now, Marsh has taken up the opening role full-time after David Warner’s retirement, as he opened in all five matches against the West Indies last month. However, the skipper’s form dipped with just 81 runs across the five matches, but the team management decided to stick with him.
Notably, Australia had tested several options, including Matt Short, Glenn Maxwell, and Jake Fraser-McGurk, but with Travis Head returning and Marsh staying up top, the upcoming T20I series against South Africa will see the new opening pair at home.

Tim David likely to bat up the order against South Africa
Meanwhile, Marsh also opened up about Tim David’s batting position in the T20I team. David scored a record-breaking century in just 37 balls during the third T20I against the West Indies after being promoted, and the captain hinted that he will bat up the order against the Proteas side.
He signed off by saying, “We've spoken about it. We saw that in the Caribbean, he came in earlier than he would normally. His skill set is made for that. The more balls he faces, hopefully the more games he wins us.”
