Trevor Bayliss will take over as Punjab Kings’ head coach in IPL 2023, the team announced on Friday. When the Eoin Morgan-led team won the 2019 World Cup at home, Bayliss was the England head coach.
Having won the 2019 World Cup with England, two IPL championships, and a Big Bash League (BBL) championship with the Sydney Sixers, Bayliss will bring his experience to the table.
In the IPL as well as globally, Bayliss has a good career. He was the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders when they won the IPL in 2012 and 2014, as well as the head coach of England when they won the 2019 ODI World Cup. Bayliss most recently served as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach for the 2020 and 2021 cricket seasons.

Despite being a member of the IPL since its inception, Kings has only twice reached the playoffs (as Kings XI Punjab). The first time was during the first season, 2008 when they advanced to the semifinals. The second time was in 2014 when they lost to Knight Riders for second place. In each of the previous four seasons, they have come in sixth place.
I’m honored to be given the Head Coach’s role: Trevor Bayliss
Anil Kumble, a legendary player for India, was replaced by Bayliss after the team chose not to renew his three-year contract because he failed to advance to the playoffs during that time.
“I’m honored to be given the Head Coach’s role with the Punjab Kings. A foundation franchise with an appetite for success. I look forward to working with a talented squad of players determined to compete for silverware,” said Bayliss in a statement issued by Punjab Kings.
In each of the previous four IPL seasons, Punjab Kings have finished sixth. Mayank Agarwal replaced KL Rahul as captain for this year’s competition, however his batting performance fell short of expectations.
