England are still more than 150 runs short of the first innings score put up by the hosts, Sri Lanka. Veteran Lankan all-rounder Angelo Matthews had scored a scintillating ton in the first innings of the second Test to help Sri Lanka go to a solid total of 381 runs in the first innings.

The Lankan bowlers have come down hard on the English batsmen in the second innings as no batsman other than Root and Buttler have been able to dominate the Lankan bowling in this match so far. England have managed to score 231 runs for the loss of five wickets so far in the second innings and as they look to continue their winning run, they will expect Root to play another mammoth knock.
