One of the greatest-ever cricketers to have ever played this beautiful game and certainly the greatest Test opener that India has ever produced, Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 72nd birthday today.

Born on July 10, 1949, Sunil Gavaskar-  the Test opener- was an epitome of remarkable grit and patience, someone who valued his wicket in the same way as an Indian women values jewelry.

Having made his debut against the West Indies during the 1971 Caribbean tour, Sunil Gavaskar turned heads as he smashed a scarcely believable 774 runs across four Test matches.

Sunil Gavaskar never really looked back post his whirlwind start to his international career. For the course of the next 16 years, he held the Indian batting together, and in the process, not only did he break and set a plethora of records, but he also went on to inspire an entire generation of Indians to take up this beautiful game.

Gavaskar became the first batsman in the history of the game to amass in excess of 10000 Test runs and smash 30 tons and by the time he retired, he was a proud record holder of both records of most runs and most centuries.

Both records were eventually broken by future superstars like Brian Lara and then Sachin Tendulkar but one thing that will always remain is the impeccable contribution that the ‘Little Master’ made towards Indian cricket.

Gavaskar also led India with distinction and under his leadership, the team went on to win the 1985 World Championships of Cricket.

He was often criticized for his sedate approach in ODI cricket. His unbeaten 36* in 60 overs against England during the 1975 World Cup still remains one of the worst ever knock by an Indian, but the 1983 World Cup-winner redeemed himself in the twilight phase of his career as he smashed one of the fastest ton by an Indian at the time during the 1987 World Cup against New Zealand.

The ‘Little Master’ hung up his boots in 1987 after having racked up more than 13000 runs and since then he has been one of the leading Indian voices in the commentary box.
