Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has hailed India’s phenomenal performance against Ireland in the ongoing U-19 World Cup 2022. The side beat their opponents by 174 runs in Trinidad on Wednesday to make it to the quarterfinal of the tournament. This happened after six of India’s regular players including skipper Yash Dhull contracted the dreaded Covid virus and was asked to stay in isolation.

VVS Laxman took to Twitter and said that this win will remain special to the side in years to come. He also termed the win as phenomenal under the circumstances in which it was achieved. That the win paved India’s path into the quarterfinals of the tournament made it even more special.

Can’t Say How Proud I Am: VVS Laxman On India U-19’s Success

“Tremendous show of character and maturity from the U-19 team. With just 11 players available for today’s game, to go out and express themselves the way they did was phenomenal. Can’t say how proud I am of them! The Ireland match is one they will cherish for life” wrote Laxman on his Twitter handle.

Sent into bat first, the India-U19 side scored 307/5 with contributions from the top-order. Angkrish Raghuvanshi (79) and Harnoor Singh(88) added 164 for the opening wicket. Their good work was carried forward by stand-in skipper Nishant Sindhu (36) and Rajvardhan Hangargekar (39 off 17). India scored 50 runs from the last five overs courtesy of Hangargekar’s cameo with the bat.

With the ball, Garv Sangwan, Aneeshwar Gautam and Kaushal Tambe took two wickets each as there were contributions from the other bowlers as well.

“I’m really happy with the win. It was great to see everyone sticking to their roles and plans. We had to focus early, had to keep those things (COVID19 cases in the camp) out of the mind and the boys responded well. Support staff are doing a great job in backing us and giving us all that we need to perform” said the stand-in-skipper after India’s win.
