In the third ODI, which was played on Friday, New Zealand defeated Ireland by a narrow margin once again. New Zealand has maintained a perfect winning streak in the ICC ODI World Cup Super League Table with their victory.

In a 719-run slugfest on a real Malahide track, impressive centuries from Paul Stirling and Harry Tector gave New Zealand a serious fright, but they managed to hold on and defend 360.

New Zealand Win 9 in 9

New Zealand once again shattered the hearts of the Irish when Ireland needed 10 runs off the final over and Blair Tickner, their most expensive bowler on tour and least experienced seamer, sealed a one-run triumph.

Having played nine games, New Zealand now has 90 points. By winning the last ODI, they were able to win the series 3-0 and are now very near third place in the points standings.

With their opening stand of 78, Guptil and Finn Allen (33) set the stage for a significant score, to which Tom Latham later added 30. Glenn Philips’ quickfire 47 came after Guptil and Henry Nicholls (79) partnered for 96.

For the Irish, Josh Little claimed wickets. Matt Henry claimed four Irish wickets, the first of which was skipper Andrew Balbirnie, who was removed for a duck to begin the Irish response.

Stirling and Tector, Ireland’s top two hitters, were left in charge and put up an outstanding 179 runs for the third wicket. Mitchell Santner dismissed Tector, leaving the hosts with 310-6 after 43.3 overs and a chance to defy the odds.

A single was not enough for the Irish, who finished on 359-9, as ten were needed off the penultimate over and then three from the final ball. Hume was unable to connect with Blair Tickner’s delivery.

The second of three T20 matches between the teams is on Monday at Stormont in Belfast.
