Varun Chakravarthy reveals truth about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni

India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has opened up about the fascinating insights that he observed during his interactions with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni during his appearance on Breakfast with Champions with Gaurav Kapur.

Chakravarthy shared how three of India’s greatest cricketing minds’ words of wisdom helped him in his journey back to the Indian cricket team. He described Rohit Sharma as the “tactician,” always focused on match awareness and strategy.

The Indian spinner said that Rohit’s advice often revolved around finding small edges, like using the older ball to create drift or varying the pace smartly to trap batters. Varun shared, “He’s extremely detailed and tactical. Talking to him feels like sitting with a master strategist.”

Talking about Virat Kohli, Chakravarthy called the former Indian captain the “motivator,” saying his fiery personality lifts everyone around him. He said that Kohli’s energy brings out the fighter in the team, and he makes players believe in turning around any situation, no matter how impossible it seems.

He added, “Virat just motivates you to the core and somewhat brings that Spartan energy inside. However impossible the situation looks, just go for the kill. He brings that energy.”

MS Dhoni, as expected, offered something completely different. The Chennai-born bowler said that the legendary Dhoni’s wisdom lies in focusing on the basics even in the toughest moments.

Chakravarthy added, “Dhoni, all he said to me was just do the basics right. Everyone under pressure looks to do something different, something out of the blue, but just think about doing the basics, and you will get through it. Yeah. And mostly you will be successful.”

Additionally, Varun Chakravarthy has expressed his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah in a unique way, drawing a comparison between the Indian fast bowler and chess legends D. Gukesh and Magnus Carlsen. Using his chess analogy, he explained that just as D Gukesh might be the current world champion but Magnus Carlsen remains the greatest, Bumrah will always be the true number one in his eyes.

He signed off by saying, “I follow chess now. When Gukesh won the championship, he told me I might be the World Champion right now, but everyone knows Magnus Carlsen is the number one player. So, I might be ranked number one, but the number one is always Jasprit Bumrah. There are Sunil Narine and Rashid Khan. I am doing well, but there is still some time to go before I can reach that stage.”

In ODIs, he has 10 wickets in four matches at an average of 19.00. He was part of India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025 triumphs.

In the IPL, Varun has been a key player for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), claiming 100 wickets in 84 matches with an average of 23.85. His impact was instrumental in KKR’s IPL 2024 title triumph, where he scalped 21 wickets at 19.14.
