Former head coach Ravi Shastri has come to the defence of Virat Kohli, claiming that he has achieved a lot and should be proud of it. Shastri mentioned that it’s quite easy to look at the failures but Kohli has been tactically sound.

Kohli and Shastri’s association at the helm of Indian cricket has worked wonders for the team, especially in the longest format of the game. However, one blemish that pops up on an otherwise excellent partnership is the lack of ICC trophies in the cabinet.

At the end of the day, he has been a tactically sound captain. Efficient. People will always judge you by results, or not by how you got the runs, but by how many runs you scored. He has evolved well; he has matured as a player. It is not easy being captain of the Indian team. He should feel proud of what he has achieved,” Shastri said in a conversation with The Week.

Ravi Shastri cites Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar’s example regarding captaincy calls

Ravi Shastri pointed out that former batting greats, Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar opted to step down from the captaincy to focus on their batting. Kohli has recently stepped down as the T20I captain and reports have also emerged that he might lose the ODI captaincy.

One hundred percent. It has happened to the best. I remember Sunny (Gavaskar) giving up [captaincy] to concentrate on his batting; Sachin Tendulkar did the same to prolong his career,” Shastri elaborated.

Kohli has led the team to 30 wins in 50 T20Is, ending as the second-most successful captain after legendary skipper, MS Dhoni.
