Virat Kohli's T20I Future Under Scanner; Doubts Over T20 World Cup 2024 Selection - Reports

In what has been the latest development as per the reports in Sports Tak, it is learned that Virat Kohli’s future in T20Is is under scanner. The reports added that the batter’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2024 is also doubtful as there will be a meeting to discuss his future.
The reports suggested that BCCI would speak to him related to his future in T20Is and then they would take the call on his future. He also added that currently with all the youngsters around, it’ll be tough for him to get into the team.
A source close to Sports Tak stated: “As of now it looks very difficult for him to make the cut but the management will speak to him and then a final call will be taken as the management doesn’t want to jump the gun, which is why a meeting with him is important before reaching any conclusion on his T20 format and World Cup slot.”
Virat Kohli hasn’t played any T20I for India ever since the T20 World Cup 2022 concluded. This was because BCCI gave opportunities to a lot of youngsters under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. Kohli was exceptional in the IPL 2023 and ended the tournament among the leading run-getters.
It was expected that Virat Kohli would feature in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa but that wasn’t the case as he opted for rest. Barring Tests and ODIs, he has been the backbone of the team in T20Is as well since the last one decade.
Virat Kohli is the leading run-getter in the T20Is with 4,008 runs to his name from 115 matches. The batter has an average strike rate of 52.74 and 137.97 respectively. To go with that, he has slammed 37 fifties and one century in the format, with a top score of an unbeaten 122.
BCCI Wants Rohit Sharma To Captain The Team In T20 World Cup 2024
The reports also added that BCCI has told Rohit Sharma that he will have to captain the team if he plays T20Is. It is learned that the governing body is keen to have him because they want young players to groom under him.
The source confirmed that Rohit Sharma will be missing the Afghanistan series but they will be waiting to see how things play. He explained:
“See we have informed Rohit that if he will play he will lead the team and you players will be there in the squad so he (Rohit) and the coach needs to take care of it. I don’t see him play Afghanistan T20 as well but let’s wait and see how things developing.”
It remains to be seen what will be the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the T20Is going forward.
