The South Africa National Cricket Team became the first team to qualify for the Super-8 stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by crushing Bangladesh by just four runs in their Group D match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Monday, June 10.
It was South Africa’s third consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, and with their thrilling win over the Tigers, they have qualified for the Super-8 of the mega event. The Proteas team is currently sitting comfortably at the top position in the Group D points table with 6 points.
At the same time, the Bangladesh cricket team is in second place in the Group D points table with two points after losing their second T20 World Cup 2024 group match to South Africa on Monday.
However, South Africa gave the game on the platter to Bangladesh, but they badly failed to capitalize on the chances and lost the match that was completely under their control in New York.
South Africa edges Bangladesh by four runs to become the first Super-8 qualifier of ICC T20 World Cup 2024
Speaking about the SA vs BAN match, the South African cricket team posted 113/6 in 20 overs, having opted to bat first at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York after winning the toss against Bangladesh.
It was South Africa's lowest score in the history of the T20 World Cup. Earlier in 2007, they had managed 116 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs against India. In response, Bangladesh could manage only 109 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs and lost the game to the Proteas side by just four runs. They have now qualified for the Super-8 stage.
Bangladesh needed 11 runs to win the match in the last over. South African captain Aiden Markram showed faith in Keshav Maharaj and handed him the ball to defend the 11-run last over. He bowled the first ball wide, and now the target was 10 runs off six balls. Then, Mahmudullah played a shot towards the square leg off Maharaj's delivery and ran for a run.
Now, Bangladesh needed five runs off five balls to win the game against South Africa. On the second ball, Jaker Ali swung the bat strongly and stole two runs. Now the target was seven runs in four balls. On the third ball, Maharaj got Zaker Ali caught by Markram, and Bangladesh needed seven runs in three balls. Maharaj bowled the fourth ball outside off, giving one run.
Well, then the target became six runs in the last two balls, and Mahmudullah got out on the fifth ball, which was a full toss bowled by Maharaj. Now, the Bangladesh team needed six runs on the last ball, and Taskin Ahmed tried to play a big shot on the last ball that was also a full toss, but the pacer could steal only one run, and that’s how Maharaj led his team to victory.
Virender Sehwag slammed Bangladesh for missed opportunities against South Africa
After the match, former Indian batter Virender Sehwag slammed the Bangladesh player for not being able to finish the match, even though Proteas spinner Maharaj gave them many chances to win the game. Sehwag was especially critical of the experienced Mahmudullah for not finishing the game, which was on a platter. He was also expecting Taskin to hit a six-off full-toss delivery, but he also let them down.
Virender Sehwag said on Cricbuzz: “Spinner has given a full toss to the batter. He has given a full toss to the set batter to finish the match. What could be a better gift than this? Don't do this. The batter, who came to bat on the last ball, also got a full toss. He also got a gift, but he didn't take it.
I can only say that Bangladesh made the same mistake that Pakistan made against India. Did Bangladesh not watch that match in New York? They were chasing 119 runs. But Bangladesh were chasing 113 runs. They made only 109 runs while chasing 113 runs. Looking at the wicket, I didn't think 113 runs should not have been scored.”
