VVS Laxman has lauded the BCCI for maintaining a world-class infrastructure in domestic and age-group cricket for India’s recent success in the U-19 World Cup. The Yash Dhull-led side defeated England by four wickets in the final. Earlier, India had won the U19 World Cup in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018.
VVS Laxman was with the India U-19 team throughout the tournament and watched them play and succeed from very close quarters. After the win, he praised BCCI’s domestic cricketing structure which is pinpointed in raising the game of the youngsters.
I think the BCCI has to be complemented. The number of matches and tournaments each age group level gets to play, whether U-16, U-19 or U-23… unfortunately due to COVID-19 they didn’t get to play any tournament and that’s why I think this tournament win is very special,” Laxman said after the victory.
He further thanked the support staff who worked hard behind the young players to keep them healthy and fit throughout the tournament. There was a Covid scare in the Indian camp which affected several players including regular skipper Yash Dhull. The support staff worked hard behind their speedy recovery during that time as well.
“The coaching staff with Hrishikesh (Kanitkar) as the head coach, Sai Raj, Munish, and all the support staff. The way they got this group together, they worked really hard, won the Asia Cup and the preparation for this World Cup was fantastic. “But in the middle of this tournament, we all know what happened to the boys. To test positive (for COVID-19) but show the kind of resilience and positive attitude was exemplary,” Laxman observed.
This Is Just The Start Of The Journey: VVS Laxman
The former Indian cricketer concluded by saying that the win is just the start for these young players and a great learning curve for the future.
“It’s important but this is just a learning process and just the start of their journey. Everyone in this group understands that. This is about development as players and as a person and it’s great to see how they’ve developed and evolved over the last couple of months but this is just the start of their journey as a cricketer” Laxman concluded saying.
