Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad backed Virat Kohli to make a strong comeback on the international stage.
Kohli’s struggles with the bat have been a talking point for experts and fanatics of the game for over a year. The former Indian skipper hasn’t been able to dominate with the willow with an abundance of runs like in his prime time.
Virat Kohli’s wait for 71st international hundred
Kohli scored his last international hundred in November 2019 in the Day-Night Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens. In fact, Kohli didn’t breach the three-figure mark in 100 games in any level of cricket including IPL.
In IPL 2022, Kohli made 341 runs in 16 matches at an average of 22.73 and strike rate of 115.98 with two fifties against eventual champions Gujarat Titans. Kohli recorded three golden ducks in the tournament but displayed a glimpse of his masterclass in 54-ball 73 in the final group stage game against Titans.
I want Virat Kohli to break Sachin Tendulkar’s century record: Dinesh Lad
Lad cited instances of great players like Viv Richards and Sunil Gavaskar suffering a tough phase in their respective careers. Lad also wants Kohli to break legendary player Sachin Tendulkar’s exemplary record of 100 international centuries.
Kohli has accumulated 70 hundreds (27 Tests and 43 ODIs) and is only behind Australia’s Ricky Ponting (71) and Tendulkar in the list.
“Virat is a wonderful batsman, and I feel he’ll make a strong comeback. Almost every cricketer has had to go through a bad patch – even Vivian Richards and Sunil Gavaskar went through a bad patch,” Lad told India TV.
“I think it’s more about mental strength rather than form. He should concentrate on that. Rest he’ll bat well, we can’t talk much about that. I want him to break Sachin’s century record,” he added.
Kohli has been rested for India’s upcoming home T20I series against South Africa and will play in the rescheduled fifth Test against England in July.
