He had missed the first match of the series due to his Sheffield Shield duties and was replaced by Josh Philippe in the side. Philippe impressed everyone with his 37-run knock and played a vital role in Australia's dominant victory.

However, Philippe was dropped on the return of Alex Carey to the setup. Expectations were sky-high from Carey while Australia were chasing a target of 265 runs in 50 overs.

However, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman disappointed his team with a poor batting show against the Shubman Gill-led side. He came out to bat at No.5 and was cleaned up by Washington Sundar in the 27th over.

On the last ball of the over, Washington Sundar bowled a full 95kmph delivery to Carey, who went for a poor sweep shot. Carey got down and was quite early to sweep, which led to the ball going past his bat and rattling the stumps. Alex Carey took a long walk back to the pavilion after scoring 9 runs off 17 balls.

Shubman Gill fails miserably with the bat

Gill has not had a good start to his captaincy career across formats. He has lost his first match as captain in T20I, Test, and ODI, becoming just the second Indian after Virat Kohli to achieve this unwanted feat.

After becoming the full-time Test captain, Gill lost his first match at the helm, but overall delivered an exceptional performance with the bat in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.

Shubman Gill finished the series as the leading run-getter, slamming 754 runs at an average of 75.40 when no other batter even touched the 600-run mark. Also, India managed to draw the five-match Test series 2-2.

However, his start as the ODI skipper has been more horrible. Along with losing the first match, he also flopped badly with the bat, scoring just 10 runs before taking a long walk back to the pavilion.

It was expected that Gill would bounce back in the second match and lead the team from the front, but that didn't happen. In the 7th over itself, the Indian ODI skipper was dismissed by Xavier Bartlett for 9-ball 9 runs.

On the first ball of the 7th over, Xavier Bartlett bowled a fullish delivery to Gill on the off-stump, and the Indian batter charged down the track with an aim to smash it over mid-off.

However, Gill was not able to make a good connection with the ball and hit it straight towards Mitchell Marsh to mid-off, who grabbed a good catch.
