India have started off their campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup. They are the defending champions of the competition and have managed to make a winning start to this edition of the World Cup as well. India defeated Team USA by 29 runs to take an early lead in the series.
Suryakumar Yadav reveals Washington Sundar's return date
While playing the series against New Zealand, Washington Sundar played in the first ODI. He then injured himself and was sidelined with a side strain. This ruled him out of the remainder of the ODI series and the T20I series as well.
Ayush Badoni had replaced him for the ODI series, and then Ravi Bishnoi, the out-of-favour Indian leg-spinner, was his replacement in the shortest format of the game. However, the injury that ruled him out for a month had given rise to numerous concerns for India.
The Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav, then revealed that Washington Sundar is now fine and will join the Indian squad in Delhi before India's match against Namibia on the 12th of February. "Washy [Washington Sundar] is joining us in Delhi," Suryakumar said after India's 29-run win over the USA in their campaign opener. "He is good, everything is fine," said Suryakumar.
"I knew if I bat till the end, I can make a difference" - Suryakumar Yadav
The saying seems true that when no one delivers, Surya does. The Indian skipper once again stepped up for India when they needed him the most. In the first half of the Indian innings, the USA bowlers scared them to the core as they were reduced to 77/6.
However, for Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian fans still had some hope left. The Indian skipper looked confident throughout the series. He said that, considering his experience across the venues in Mumbai, he believed he could seal the game for India at the Wankhede.
"Only I can tell how much pressure I was feeling," Suryakumar said. "But at the same time, I had the belief that I had batted in similar situations. And I have played a lot of cricket in the maidans of Mumbai, so I knew if I bat till the end, I can make a difference.
"After winning also you get to learn a lot of things," claimed the Indian skipper
Suryakumar went on to claim further that it was just not the usual Wankhede wicket this time around. However, he praised the groundsmen and the curator at his home ground for having done their best to prepare the best pitch.
He then claimed that everything is in no one's control since the sunlight was low and everything couldn't be brushed under the carpet; despite the pitch conditions, India should have batted smartly.
"After winning also, you get to learn a lot of things. And today we learned that we could have batted a little better, or maybe a little smarter. Two small-small partnerships could have got us to 160 rather than one batter or two batters trying to play till the end," he concluded.
