Former CSK star Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that during his conversation with Washington Sundar, the Indian all-rounder seemed completely unaware of any such trade to the Chennai Super Kings and said that nothing was communicated to him by the Gujarat Titans.
The Chennai Super Kings had their worst season in IPL 2025 as they finished the season as the last team on the IPL points table. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side could not finish well, as MS Dhoni took over the side after the CSK skipper was ruled out due to an elbow injury.
Gaikwad will return as CSK's skipper in 2026 and is expected to bolster their batting record. He will be backed by Mumbai youngster Ayush Mhatre, South African youngster Dewald Brevis, and New Zealand youngster Rachin Ravindra.
CSK reported signing of Washington Sundar to replace Ravichandran Ashwin
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the IPL after a poor season in 2025. Ashwin has parted ways with his former franchise, CSK, and has moved to an overseas league, as he registered as the first Indian player to play in the BBL.
After his retirement, CSK was looking for a replacement and found the right fit in the form of current Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar. Sundar replaced Ashwin in the Indian squad across formats and has now emerged as a successful cricketer across formats.
Sundar played for the Gujarat Titans last season, after he was brought in the IPL mega-auction. Having played just 5 games, he scored 130+ runs and picked a handful of wickets as well. The Super Kings might be making more use of the all-rounder, as they are a more spin-dependent side since they play at Chepauk.
Ravichandran Ashwin rules out Washington Sundar's trade to CSK
Ravichandran Ashwin was recently asked if Washington Sundar is making a move to CSK as his replacement. Ashwin said that he had a word with the Indian all-rounder, and he seemed unaware of any such move.
R. Ashwin said, “I called Washington Sundar and spoke to him."
Washi said, ‘I don’t know anything about that trade. The franchise hasn’t communicated anything to me. I’m happy with GT, my cricket has grown a lot here, and I’m happy with where I am right now.’”

CSK has sidelined talks on Sanju Samson
The Chennai Super Kings have sidelined their interest in seasoned IPL campaigner and experienced wicket-keeper batsman, Sanju Samson. Sanju Samson has played several matches for the Rajasthan Royals, and as their skipper, he has also led them to the final of IPL 2022.
Samson has asked the Royals to release him, as he wants to explore more options within the IPL mini-auction. CSK, who previously looked interested in the trade, later refused it owing to some disagreement with the Royals, who had asked for the likes of Ravindra Jadeja in exchange for the wicket-keeper.
Samson's stance still remains unclear, as even the Royals have not confirmed his release till now.
