England National Cricket Team’s shocking exit from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has left fans and former players devastated. Among them was former England cricketer Neil Fairbrother, who was so heartbroken that he was moved to tears after the team’s elimination from the first round.
Neil Fairbrother’s emotional moment was revealed by Wasim Akram. The legendary Pakistan cricketer further revealed that he consoled his dear friend when he was in tears after Afghanistan crushed England in the must-win game at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Akram shared that the former English cricketer told him that he wept over the result, but he reminded him that it was just a game and Afghanistan’s victory in such conditions was always on the cards. Earlier, England’s five-wicket loss to Australia added misery to their campaign.
He literally told me, 'I wept': Wasim Akram
Wasim Akram said on the 'Dressing Room' show: “The way they are playing, the cricket-loving people of England must be quite upset. I just messaged my dear friend Neil Fairbrother; he literally told me, 'I wept.'. I told him, 'Hang on, buddy, it is just a game, and it was always on the cards'.”
Notably, the bond between Akram and Fairbrother is decades-long, as they shared the dressing room during their time in county cricket for Lancashire. Fairbrother was a prolific left-handed batter who played 10 Tests and 75 ODIs for England.
However, Fairbrother did not have a long international career, but he was a dominant force in domestic cricket with over 20,000 first-class runs to his name.
Wasim Akram baffled over England’s strategy in the ICC Champions Trophy
Meanwhile, Wasim Akram also raised serious questions about England’s strategy and squad selection for the ongoing prestigious tournament. The legendary cricketer has pointed out that they had picked only three specialist batters and overloaded the squad with eight bowlers, but they still struggled to find a proper fifth bowling option.
This forced Joe Root to bowl, leaving Akram confused and baffled over England’s team selection for the tournament. After England’s exit, many former cricketers have been demanding the sacking of the captain, Jos Buttler.
Akram signed off by saying, “If you look at the England squad, you will see there are three specialist batters. There are eight specialist bowlers, but still, they fell short of a fifth bowler. Joe Root was bowling. Can somebody explain to me why they picked a squad with a gazillion bowlers?”
Notably, they failed to make it to the knockouts of an ODI tournament for the second consecutive time, having failed to reach the semifinals in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
England will play their final game in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 against South Africa on March 1 at the National Cricket Stadium in Lahore. Apart from South Africa, Afghanistan and Australia are in the race to qualify for the semifinals from Group B.
