Team India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, known for his calm demeanor, lost his temper on Day 1 of the first Test against the West Indies. Bumrah was heard using a swear word while bowling during the West Indies’ first innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 2.
West Indies captain Roston Chase opted to bat after winning the toss, but his decision backfired as the team crumbled against the Indian pace bowling attack. The Caribbean side managed to score only 162 runs, with Mohammed Siraj taking four wickets. Jasprit Bumrah picked up wickets on the opening day.
Jasprit Bumrah Faced Scrutiny After Skipping Two Tests Against England
Jasprit Bumrah entered the West Indies series under the scanner, having been criticized for sitting out two Tests against England earlier in the year due to workload management.
Siraj set the tone early with his breakthroughs, while Bumrah took one wicket up early before returning later to dismantle the tail. Bumrah castled Justin Greaves with a searing delivery that uprooted the off-stump in the 39th over. Greaves had managed 32 before being dismissed.
He struck again with another unplayable yorker two overs later that sent Johann Layne back for just one. Bumrah showed a selfless gesture toward his bowling partner. With Siraj on the verge of a five-wicket haul, Bumrah deliberately bowled four deliveries wide in the 41st over.
Siraj was denied his fifer when skipper Shubman Gill opted not to reintroduce him after the 42nd over. Bumrah and Siraj put India in a commanding position.
Jasprit Bumrah Surpasses Kapil Dev and Other Legends Against West Indies
Bumrah has set a new benchmark in Indian cricket by becoming the fastest Indian pacer to reach 50 Test wickets on home soil. The right-arm fast bowler achieved the milestone in just 1,747 deliveries, surpassing Mohammed Shami, who took 2,267 balls.
Bumrah reached 50 wickets in 24 innings, equaling Javagal Srinath’s record but with fewer deliveries. Kapil Dev needed 25 innings, while Ishant Sharma and Shami took 27 each.
Among bowlers with 50 or more Test wickets in India, Bumrah boasts the best average of 17. Only Australia’s Richard Benaud, with 52 wickets at 18.38, has managed an average under 20 on Indian pitches.
B*****d Saare Piche Khel Rahe Hai Merko - Jasprit Bumrah
During Day 1 of the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah was caught on the stump mic expressing his frustration after a delivery to Jomel Warrican. The West Indies batter edged the ball safely between the slip cordon and gully for four runs.
Bumrah, clearly annoyed at the fielding setup and the player hitting four, was overheard using an expletive, a rare moment of visible anger from the usually composed Indian pacer.
"B*****d saare piche khel rahe hai merko," Bumrah said.
