After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, England had a decent start to the first day of play. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, the openers, put up 55 runs for the first wicket. Both batsmen produced some excellent shots and played in a positive frame of mind. But when Duckett lost his wicket to Ravichandran Ashwin for 35 runs off 39 balls, he became the first English player to fall.

Ravichandran Ashwin ended Zak Crawley’s tenure at the wicket as well, he was dismissed for 20 runs off 40 balls. Ollie Pope was the first victim of Ravindra Jadeja and was dismissed for 1 run shortly after Crawley left the crease. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow decided to steady the batting after England lost three wickets in rapid succession, adding nearly 60 runs for the fourth wicket.

England ended at 108/3 at Lunch in 28 overs on Day 1, both batsmen looking well. Jonny Bairstow lost his wicked to Axar Patel shortly for 37 runs off 58 balls, while Root also didn’t survive long before falling to Ravindra Jadeja for 29 runs off 60 balls. Ben Foakes was also dismissed after getting 4 runs off of 24 balls by Patel.

Ben Stokes, the captain, took over at this point and attempted to add some significant runs with the English tailenders. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Rehan Ahmed for 13 runs, while Tom Hartley made some big strokes early on but ultimately lost his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja.

Ben Stokes started to play ‘bazball’ and started to take on the Indian bowlers. Stokes completed his half-century with a six. With just two wickets left, Mark Wood was not able to survive for much time and was removed by Ravichandran Ashwin for 11 runs. Analyzing the situation, Stokes was also not left with no other option but to attack, and at last, he had to lose his wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin ended the innings with 3 wickets a piece, whereas Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel added 2 wickets in their column.

England have returned to India after three years and showcased the same attacking ‘bazball’ approach against the Indian team. However, the spinners once again dominated in the Indian conditions picking up 8 of the 10 English wickets. Apart from the spin, the Hyderabad wicket is pretty much decent to bat, and the Indian batsmen will focus on putting up a big first-innings score on the board.
