During the first semi-final match of the Vitality T20 Blast at Edgbaston, Northamptonshire captain David Willey pulled off one of the best catches in cricketing history. He, along with his teammate Saif Zaib, did the impossible with a mind-boggling relay catch under pressure in the knockout game on Saturday.

The incident happened while Somerset batter Craig Overton was batting with Ben Sanderson bowling for Northants; the bowler bowled a full slower delivery, Overton thought he could have a maximum before Willey did the impossible by catching the ball in the air and throwing it to his teammate Zaib, who had a simple grab.

The catch might turn out to be the catch of the tournament. This happened in the 17.3 over when the game was equally poised with 33 runs required off 16 deliveries.

Under pressure, David Willey became the spiderman for his team as the skipper’s catch inspired the team to win the game and qualify for the final, as Overton, after striking the ball to the boundary on the previous ball, failed to deliver and was out for 5 runs.

Northamptonshire defends a low total

Coming to the match, Somerset won the toss and opted to bowl first. They had a good start with the ball, with the Northamptonshire side losing three wickets early. Chris Lynn played a solid knock of 39 runs, and then some contributions from Saif Zaib and Lewis McManus for 26 and 21 runs helped the side to post decent runs on the board with 143/10 in their 20 overs.

Somerset, while chasing, had a worst start with Willey doing the job in the first ball, dismissing Tom Banton for a golden duck as they were reduced to 12/3 at one stage. Then they had a good partnership with Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Will Smeed stitching 62 runs between them and stabilising the collapse.

Smeed scored 49 runs and fell short of his fifty, with Kohler-Cadmore scoring 29. After this partnership broke, Somerset could not cope with the run chase as David Willey finished off with the spell of 3/17 and Ben Sanderson also picking 3/28 as Somerset could only score 126/9, losing the match by 17 runs.

"That's like red rag to a bull to me"- David Willey after the win in the semi-final

After winning the match, David Willey said the Somerset side thought they won the match after scoring such a low total as they were overconfident, which acted as a motivation for him and his team.

"I think for two-and-a-half games we've been absolutely diabolical against them, and we've turned it on in the last little hour and a half," Willey said.

"Look, do you know what? There was a moment I walked out there, as we were going out for that second half, and they looked like they thought they'd just won it. That's what it looked like to me, and that's like red rag to a bull to me."

"Coming from little old Northampton, I don't like that. It really got me revved up and generally speaking when I'm revved up I play my best cricket, so it was very satisfying."
