Glenn Maxwell showcased intense aggression while fielding in a knockout match of the Big Bash League 2024-25 between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars. Glenn Maxwell took an impressive catch and gestured to the crowd to remain quiet, which reminded many of his former RCB teammate, Virat Kohli.

The knockout match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars is currently underway at the Sydney Showground Stadium, where the losing team will be eliminated. Notably, the Stars chose to bowl first after winning the bat flip. The Thunder scored 135/7 from their 19 overs at ENGIE Stadium on January 22.

In the 7th over of Sydney Thunder's innings, Matthew Gilkes attempted to hit Usama Mir's delivery for a six but mistimed the shot. Glenn Maxwell, who was positioned at long-on, leaped to take a sharp catch. Gilkes was dismissed after scoring 26 runs off 16 balls, with the help of three boundaries and one six.

After completing the catch, Maxwell performed the silence gesture to celebrate the wicket, asking the crowd to quiet down by putting a finger to his lips - a move reminiscent of Virat Kohli’s signature crowd-silencing gesture.

The Big Bash League's official account on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a clip of Maxwell's gesture with the caption, "Glenn Maxwell just told the ENGIE Stadium crowd to 🤫 #BBL14."

Matthew Gilkes Survives After TV Umpire Overturns Catch Decision

Earlier, Gilkes survived after appearing to be caught by Tom Curran off Peter Siddle's bowling. The umpires ruled that the ball had touched the ground. The game was paused due to a weather alert for lightning and thunder. Play resumed after a brief delay, with the match reduced to 19 overs per side.

“Oh what a catch, gee there has been some good catches (this summer), that went low and hard and Curran got his hands underneath it,” Mark Howard said on Fox Cricket.

“Gilkes is just remaining to have a look at the umpire but it looked pretty clean. The umpires are just having a chat about it.”

“There have been a few of them this summer, across all formats, again, depending on what change room you’re sitting in you can see what you want to see,” legendary wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist said.

“It definitely carried but it just felt like it was on its way out again and he didn’t have full control of the ball and at that point it touched the grass and that’s enough for the third umpire to say no.”

Thunder Fail to Appeal or Review After Peter Handscomb Nicks Ball to Keeper

At the time of writing, the Melbourne Stars were struggling at 29/3 in 6 overs, with Marcus Stoinis (6) and Glenn Maxwell (0) at the crease. Sam Harper had managed only 6 off 3 balls, including one four, before being bowled by Nathan McAndrew while attempting a lap shot.

Peter Handscomb could have been out for a duck after nicking the ball to the keeper. However, the Thunder failed to appeal or review, giving Handscomb a second chance. He was eventually dismissed for 11 off 15, trapped LBW by Tom Andrews in the 5th over of the run chase.
