Ajinkya Rahane smashed Trent Boult with a sumptuous square-cut for a boundary and it was enough for the Indian fans in the stadium to celebrate a rare boundary that came on the sixth morning of the ICC World Test Championship final.
But, as it turned out the celebration proved to be short-lived as Trent Boult has the last laugh on the very next delivery.
Boult, who had troubled Ajinkya Rahane with the away-going deliveries in the proceeding overs, proceeded to strangle down the leg-side and BJ Watling did the rest by taking a simple catch.
And, the change in expression of the Indian fan, who was celebrating the boundary on the previous ball was priceless, as the pump of the fist was replaced by a grimace.
Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket meant India were five down with just 94 runs ahead. Kyle Jamieson was once again the wrecker-in-chief on the sixth morning as the tall pacer knocked over both Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara with a perfect set-up.
While Kohli was lulled into edging an away going delivery after a series of inswingers, in case of Pujara, it was a case of Kyle Jamieson playing a double bluff as he set the field for a bumper but proceeded to bowl an outswinger, which Pujara poked at half.
The onus is now on Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja to take India to a respectable total in the post-Lunch session.
