Former Pakistan National Cricket Team player Mohammad Hafeez made a bold statement following the poor outing of Mohammed Rizwan-led side in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He targeted the 90s players, saying that they didn't leave any legacy behind.

Mohammad Hafeez's comments came during the discussion on Tapmad in Pakistan. The former player of the team talked about why the cricket in the nation is going down while sitting in a panel, which featured Shoaib Akhtar and Shoaib Malik as well.

Pakistan National Cricket Team had the worst possible outing in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Mohammad Rizwan-led side faced a group stage exit and was the first team to be eliminated, failing to win a single game and ending their group at last in the points table.

Pakistan National Cricket Team started the tournament with a loss against the New Zealand National Cricket Team and then was at the receiving end of a thrashing against the India National Cricket Team. Their last league game was washed out due to rain as they became the first host nation to not win any game in the ICC tournament.

I am a big fan of 90s players but when it comes to legacy, they left nothing - Mohammad Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez talked about the importance of winning an ICC tournament, saying that it creates inspiration among the fans and the younger generation. While calling himself a huge fan of 90s players, he made a bold statement, saying that they didn't win any ICC event even though they were big names in cricket. He said:

"Winning an ICC event creates inspiration among the fans, among the younger generation. I am a big fan of 90s players. But when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan. Neither did they win an ICC event in 1996, 1999, and 2003, they lost badly. They could have won a final, but we lost badly.

"As a star, as a player, they were the mega superstars. But they couldn't inspire us by winning an ICC event. Then those things changed a little. We faced some difficulties. We won in 2009, we lost in 2007.

The players of the 90s couldn't win the ICC event - Mohammad Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez further added that winning the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy gave inspiration to the next generation and had an impact on Pakistan Cricket. He added:

"Alhamdulillah, we won in 2009 under Yonis' captaincy . So we got an inspiration. Unfortunately, there was a bad incident with Pakistan's cricket because of which Pakistan's cricket went away. And we couldn't recover it till today. Then we won an ICC trophy in 2017. That was a big inspiration.

"Today people idealize Babar Azam. The reason is that even though he didn't have a big impactful role in that event but he was present in it. And the 2017 ICC trophy made a big impact on Pakistan's cricket. So, unfortunately, the players of the 90s couldn't win the ICC event."

Ye jo 73 ODIs hai jo hum India se upar jeete hue hai wo humne hi jeete hai - Shoaib Akhtar

Mohammad Hafeez's comments didn't go well with Shoaib Akhtar as he gave a befitting reply to his fellow penalist. He stressed that Pakistan's stunning ODI record against India is only because of their generation. He said:

“Ye jo 73 ODIs hai jo hum India se upar jeete hue hai wo humne hi jeete hai.”
