The legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni was unable to finish the match for his team against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday, March 30.

MS Dhoni was dismissed in the final over of the innings, thanks to the sensational catch picked up by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) star Shimron Hetmyer at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.

MS Dhoni scores 16 runs off 11 balls

Dhoni was at the receiving end of heavy criticism after CSK's last match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This was because he came to bat at the No.9 spot after Ravichandran Ashwin when Chennai Super Kings had all but lost the match.

Dhoni was quick to rectify his error from the previous match and walked in to bat at the No.7 spot after Ravindra Jadeja against RR. He started off his innings cautiously despite the required run rate being above 10.

It was expected that Dhoni would hit boundaries after getting set and steer CSK to a win. However, that didn't happen as he was dismissed for 11-ball 16, with one four and one six.

On the first ball of the 20th over, Sandeep Sharma bowled a low wide full toss to Dhoni, who shuffled in and heaved it across the line, aiming to hit a boundary.

Looking at the ball flying in his direction Shimron Hetmyer rapidly moved to his left from deep mid-wicket and took an exceptional catch to send MS Dhoni packing.

CSK were eventually restricted to 176/6 and the Rajasthan Royals clinched a 6-run win in the match - which was their first in the ongoing season.

What happened in the previous IPL match between RR and CSK?

The previous match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings was held in the 61st game of the Indian Premier League 2024 season on May 12. Chennai Super Kings bagged a five-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in that match at Chepauk.

Batting first, Rajasthan Royals struggled to bat well on a sluggish surface, managing to post 141/5 in their 20 overs. Riyan Parag top-scored with 47* off 35, while Dhruv Jurel provided late fireworks with a quick 28 off 18.

For CSK, the bowling unit did a great job and kept the RR batters under pressure, with Simarjeet Singh emerging as the standout performer, claiming 3/26 in his four overs. Tushar Deshpande also chipped in with two wickets.

CSK’s chase started positively, with Ruturaj Gaikwad (42* off 41), Rachin Ravindra (27 off 18), and Daryl Mitchell (22 off 13) providing a solid foundation. Also, Shivam Dube came up with an aggressive 18 off 11 that helped CSK maintain momentum, and despite some hiccups, CSK comfortably sealed the win in 18.2 overs.
