Earlier, batting first, South Africa posted a huge total of 315/6 on the board, thanks to the heroics of Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram.
Ryan Rickelton emerged as the top performer as he slammed 103 runs off 106 balls. The Proteas players would be hoping to continue their good form and lead the team to the Champions Trophy glory.
South Africa Won The 1998 Champions Trophy
The Proteas won the inaugural edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in the year 1998. At that time it was called the ICC Knockout and played in as cut-throat a structure as it gets.
South Africa clinched the title with a thrilling 4-wicket victory over the West Indies in the final held in Dhaka, on November 1.
After being invited to bat first, Brian Lara's West Indies posted a good total of 245 on the board, thanks to an amazing century from Philo Wallace.
Wallace smashed 103 off 102 balls, with 11 fours and five sixes, before being dismissed in the 35th over. Carl Hooper (49) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (27) also played small yet crucial innings that helped the Men In Maroon register a good score.
For the Proteas, Jacques Kallis delivered a sensational bowling performance. He decimated the West Indies batting line-up to claim 5/30 in 7.3 overs.
Chasing the target of 246, the South Africa opening pair added 54 runs to provide a good start to their team. After the dismissal of openers, South Africa had their nervous moments, but skipper Hansie Cronje played a brilliant innings of unbeaten 61 off 77 balls to ensure that he had the momentum.
Kallis also contributed with 37 runs, while Dale Benkenstein (27) and Derek Crookes (24*) made good contributions to help the Proteas cross the finish line with 18 balls to spare.
Jacques Kallis was awarded the Player of the Match for his stellar all-round show in the summit clash of the competition.
