After throwing his bat to teammate Karim Janat, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan got involved in a fiery argument with South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje.
Rashid Khan's Afghani side was in action earlier today against Aiden Markram's Proteas side in the 1st semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. This was Afghanistan's first ever appearance at an ICC white-ball event's semi-finals and it did not go down the way they had expected it to. South Africa featured only in their third T20 World Cup semi-final and for the first time since 2014.
It was supposed to be an even contest between two of the best sides in the 2024 T20 WC but it eventually ended as a one-sided affair. Afghanistan's fairy-tale run in the 20-team event came to an end in the semi-finals as the South Africans earned victory in an emphatic manner. Rashid Khan's men suffered a 9-wicket loss to Aiden Markram's side who will now play their maiden T20 WC final.
The match, which took place at the Brian Lara stadium in Trinidad, saw Afghanistan batting first after winning the toss. The Afghans had to post a significant total on the board in order to put the Proteas under pressure but
it was the Asians who fell under the bus. The South African bowling attack led by Kagiso Rabada, dismantled the batting order and got them all out for just 56 runs.
Marco Jansen starred with figures of 3/16 in 3 overs while Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje scalped a brace each at economy rates of less than 5. Chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi, from 1.5 overs of bowling, also scalped 3 wickets by giving away just 6 runs.
From Afghanistan's perspective, not a single batter was able to score more than 11 runs with Azmatullah Omarzai ending as the highest scorer with just 10 runs. The second highest scorers were Karim Janat and Rashid Khan who scored 8 runs each. While South Africa's bowling performance was a major highlight of the match, an incident between Anrich Nortje and Rashid also stole the news.
What happened between Anrich Nortje and Rashid Khan?
During the 7th over of the 1st innings when Rashid Khan came out to bat, Anrich Nortje gave the former a fiery welcome to the crease. As Nortje tried to pose some dominance already, he bowled a bouncer before sending a few words to Rashid, who was unhappy with the fast bowler's words.
Rashid Khan would then go on to complain about the incident to the on-field Umpire who settled things between the two international cricketers. The match then continued and to Rashid's misfortune, his wicket was claimed by none other than Anrich Nortje himself with a sensational good length ball to clean up the stumps.
After Afghanistan's 1st innings, South Africa chased down the target of 57 by 8.5 overs and reached their maiden ICC finale.
