Australian skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first. Sam Konstas entertained the Melbourne crowd with an aggressive style of batting. The 19-year-old reached a maiden Test half-century in just 52 balls, but his knock came to an end when he was dismissed by spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

After Konstas' dismissal, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne added a 65-run stand for the second wicket. Khawaja reached his first half-century in the series off 101 balls. However, the southpaw was dismissed after mistiming a half-tracker from Bumrah and edging the ball to mid-wicket for 57.

Labuschagne and Steve Smith formed an 83-run stand for the third wicket, putting Australia in a strong position. However, Labuschagne's aggressive approach led to his downfall as he became Washington Sundar’s first victim of the Boxing Day Test. He was caught at mid-off after scoring 72 runs.

Bumrah struck again in the following over, dismissing Travis Head for a duck. Head left a delivery that crashed into the top of the off stump. Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for 4 runs after edging to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Australia lost three wickets for 9 runs in 24 balls, allowing India to regain momentum.

Smith and wicketkeeper Alex Carey formed a 53-run stand for the sixth wicket. India struggled with some fielding errors, and Bumrah had to briefly leave the field for treatment for a potential calf issue. However, the second new ball worked in India's favor, as Carey was dismissed for 31 by Akesh Deep.
