Every now and then, Roelof van der Merwe stuns the cricketing world by pulling off absolutely spectacular catches on the field and he was at it again on Thursday (August 10) during the match between Welsh Fire and Birmingham Phoenix in the ongoing The Hundred.
Roelof van der Merwe is plying his trade for Welsh Fire in the ongoing competition. As far as the match is concerned, Welsh Fire got back to winning ways with a convincing 6-wicket win over Birmingham Phoenix. Batting first, the Birmingham-based outfit scored 112 for 7 in the allotted 100 deliveries.
Liam Livingstone was the highest run-getter for the team, scoring 28 off 20 balls. For Welsh Fire, Haris Rauf, David Payne, and Roelof van der Merwe picked up two wickets each. In reply, Welsh Fire chased down the total in 85 balls. Opener Stephen Eskinazi set the platform for the win by smashing 43 off just 18 balls.
Roelof van der Merwe’s stunning catch:
Talking about the catch from Roelof van der Merwe, he came up with the stunning effort to send back Birmingham Phoenix captain Moeen Ali just when the allrounder was looking to break the shackles. Moeen was batting on 17 off 12 balls when he decided to play a big shot against left-arm pacer David Payne.
It was the 67th ball of the innings. Payne bowled an angled delivery that landed on the good length and Moeen decided to swing across the line. He, however, failed to make a good connection and ended up top-edging. The ball went really high toward Long-on where Roelof van der Merwe was standing.
The ball was landing well in from of the former South Africa international and he ran forward to take the catch. He covered the distance quickly to position himself under the ball but as the ball landed in his palms, it popped out.
And as the ball popped out, it looked like he had missed the chance. The ball then bounced off his right shoulder and only made things tougher for the spinner. Roelof van der Merwe, however, left everyone stunned with his reaction as he dived to successfully catch the ball with his right hand. His and his teammates’ reaction after the catch said it all.
