PC: X

India captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed against the run of play during the second innings of the first Test between India and New Zealand at Bengaluru. The Indian skipper was batting beautifully till then but was dismissed by New Zealand's left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel.

It happened during the 22nd over of India's second innings when Rohit Sharma was facing Ajaz Patel. Patel bowled a length ball on the stumps which Rohit defended on the front foot. However, the ball bounced in the crease and went on to hit the stumps.

Although Rohit looked behind, the ball had already disturbed the stumps by the time he could react. He was absolutely distraught with his dismissal at such an important phase of the game.

Although it was an unfortunate dismissal, Rohit Sharma also looked a little lazy while looking back which might have costed him his wicket. The New Zealand players celebrated the big wicket while Rohit had his hands on his face.

He slowly went back to the dressing room as the crowd was stunned in silence. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were batting well and had started to steady the innings after Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed just after tea break.

But their 23-run partnership was finally broken by Ajaz Patel. Rohit was dismissed for a well-made 52 off 63 balls, which included 8 fours and 1 six. But he would be disappointed as India needed a lot more from the captain.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a good start in the second innings. The India openers collected 72 runs for the first wicket in 17 overs before Jaiswal lost his wicket for 35 to Ajaz Patel.

Rachin Ravindra takes New Zealand to a formidable lead

Earlier in the day, New Zealand were all out for 402 in their first innings. Rachin Ravindra smashed a memorable hundred and was the last wicket to fall for them. Ravindra scored 134 off 157 balls with 13 fours and 4 sixes.

India started the day well by picking up three wickets in the opening hour. But Ravindra and Southee turned the tables with their counter-attacking approach. Ravindra, in particular, showed his full range of strokes.

The left-hander was equally good against both the fast bowlers and the spinners. He came down the track to Kuldeep Yadav consistently enough to disrupt the bowler's lengths.

Devon Conway and Tim Southee play valuable knocks

While Ravindra scored a dominating century, Devon Conway and Tim Southee also played valuable knocks. Conway scored a fiery 91 off 105 balls while Southee scored 65 off 73 balls down the order as New Zealand took a first innings lead of 356 runs.

For India, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets apiece while Mohammed Siraj got two wickets. Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin picked up a wicket each.
