Yashasvi Jaiswal received his maiden ODI cap from the captain Rohit Sharma, while Harshit Rana was presented his cap by the senior pacer Mohammed Shami in Nagpur.
Rohit Sharma said at the toss: "We wanted to bowl first, but it doesn't matter a lot. Need to be aggressive with the ball at the start and then need to do well later. Nice to get some time off, it's a fresh start and this is a great chance to do well. It's very important to get some gametime, try and maximize whatever opportunity we have. Jaiswal and Harshit are making their debuts, unfortunately Virat isn't playing, he had a knee problem last night."
Harshit Rana new to international arena; Yashasvi Jaiswal already becomes a household name
Notably, Harshit Rana has been picked ahead of the senior pacer Mohammed Siraj, and the Delhi lad has also been considered for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, Rana didn’t have a great start, as he leaked 11 runs in his first over of his ODI career in Nagpur.
Speaking about the debutants from Team India, Yashasvi Jaiswal is an exciting top-order batter who has already impressed one and all with his batting in both Tests and T20Is. With 1798 runs at an average of 52.88 in 19 Tests and 723 runs at a strike rate of 164.31 in 23 T20Is, Jaiswal is now seen as the future star for the Indian cricket team across the formats.

On the other hand, Harshit Rana is a rising fast bowler, and he made his Test debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. He has so far taken four wickets from two Tests. The young fast bowler also made his T20I debut during the recent series against England. He recorded the impressive figures of 3/33 on his debut after playing as Varun Chakravarthy’s concussion replacement.
Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav return to ODI actions
Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami is playing his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup final against Australia after his lengthy recovery from the injuries. He played a couple of T20Is against England last month but was not at his best with the ball.
In the first ODI against England, Shami picked the new ball in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, but the pacer is not fully running in. Well, the Men in Blue went with three spinners: Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav, who is also making a comeback to the national side after recovering from hernia surgery.
The hosts have picked five specialist batters—captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, and wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul—for the first ODI against England in Nagpur. However, the Nagpur pitch is not traditionally offering high-scoring games, but for this match, batters can make the most of the conditions at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.
