Rohit Sharma was having a poor day on the field. He was not able to take a fairly difficult catch of Devon Conway that went low to his left and then dropped an easy chance of Will Young.
This catch brought some relief and smile back on his face. Will Young was looking solid at the crease but was dismissed for 33 off 73 balls with 5 fours to his name. He stitched a valuable partnership of 75 runs for the second wicket with Devon Conway.
Devon Conway shines for New Zealand
Conway, on the other hand, played a blazing innings and looked to take the game away from India's grasp. The left-handed opener played some eye-catching shots during his magnificent knock.
He looked confortable against both pace and spin and showed his class. He looked good for a well deserved hundred but was bowled by R Ashwin for 91 off 105 balls. He struck 11 fours and 3 sixes during his knock.
Indian batters skittled out cheaply by New Zealand
Meanwhile, it was a difficult day for Team India, who were shot out for their lowest score at home in Test cricket. After opting to bat, India were bowled out for just 46, thanks to some top-quality bowling from New Zealand's seamers.
Just two India batters reached the double-figure mark as Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 13 and Rishabh Pant scored 20. Top players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to make significant contributions as India succumbed badly under overcast skies.
NZ skipper Tom Latham needed to use just three fast bowlers to bowl out India as Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and William O'Rourke were enough to dismantle the opposition batting line-up.
Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers with 5-15 while William O'Rourke finished with 4-22. Tim Southee picked up the first wicket of the day in the form of India's captain Rohit Sharma. Southee finished with 1-8.
