Former Indian cricketer and well-known commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has yet again found himself in hot water spitting some nonsense while commentating during the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the UAE.
On Friday, October 4, the India national women’s cricket team kicked off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium. However, India Women suffered a crushing defeat of 58 runs against the White Ferns, but it was Sanjay Manjrekar who made headlines.
Sanjay Manjrekar makes an insensitive comment in ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024
When India was chasing the target, the former Indian batter and commentator Aakash Chopra mentioned the coaching staff of the Indian women’s team, and that’s when Sanjay Manjrekar made yet another bizarre statement that irked many and even the commentary box.
Currently, Amol Muzumdar is serving as India’s head coach and batting coach, while Munish Bali is the fielding coach and Aavishkar Salvi is working as the bowling coach. And Chopra also mentioned Mohammed Jaffer while talking about the coaching staff of the women’s team.
At that moment, Sanjay Manjrekar said something that would certainly hurt the Indian coaches, as the outspoken commentator bluntly said that he has no interest in north Indian cricketers, and that’s why he couldn’t recognize Bali on-air during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash in Dubai.
I've no interest in the North Indian cricketers: Manjrekar
Sanjay Manjrekar said in the commentary box, “Sorry, I didn't recognize him (Munish Bali). I don't pay much attention to him like the North Indian players. I've no interest in the North Indian cricketers.” Now, the video of him saying such an insensitive remark is all over the internet.

Notably, Bali might not have that successful a career as a player, but he has a rich history as a coach. He has already worked with the India A team and the Indian team as well when he was working at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru before joining the women’s team.
He played for Punjab in the domestic cricket. He was also part of the coaching staff when India won the gold at the 2023 Asian Games. He has the honor to work with the VVS Laxman, apart from star players like Sanju Samson, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav.
India vs New Zealand Match highlights
Speaking about the game, Sophie Devine's brilliant unbeaten 57 from just 36 balls, following a strong start from openers Georgia Plimmer (34) and Suzie Bates (27) took New Zealand to a solid total of 160/4 after opting to bat first against India Women in Dubai.
This total ultimately proved too much for India to chase in their Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener. India's batting lineup struggled against New Zealand's pace attack, with Rosemary Mair taking four wickets and Lea Tahuhu claiming three.
Kiwi leg-spinner Eden Carson was responsible for India’s early damage as he removed both openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana in quick succession for just 12 and 2 runs, respectively.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, batting at No. 3 for the first time in 18 months, managed only 15 from 14 balls before being dismissed during the powerplay.
With India short on batting depth, they collapsed, losing six wickets for just 60 runs and getting bowled out for 102 in 19 overs to lose the game.
