The West Indies National Cricket Team made a dominant start to their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 preparations as they stunned the Australia National Cricket Team by 35 runs in the warm-up game at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain on May 31.
The Kangaroos easily crushed Namibia by 7 wickets in their first T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up match, but the West Indies showed the world that they couldn’t make the mistake by taking them lightly, as the Kangaroos went flat in front of the hosts in their second warm-up match in Port of Spain.
It was a high-scoring affair, as 479 runs were scored in the T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up between Australia and the West Indies, but the hosts eventually secured a convincing 35-run victory over the 2022 edition’s winners by showcasing their prowess with both bat and ball on home conditions.
Shamar Joseph's stunning dismissal of David Warner steals show in WI vs AUS warm-up game
Well, Australian opener David Warner, who will retire from international cricket with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024 and his battle with West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph, stole the show at the Queen's Park Oval with a last laugh.
Joseph rattled off Warner’s stump for just 15 after conceding two fours and a six off his previous three deliveries, and it was the best moment of the match on Friday. The official Instagram handles of the ICC and T20 World Cup shared the clip to show how beautifully clean and bold Warner.
He charged in from around the wicket, delivering a good-length ball that angled in from outside off and maintained a low bounce. Warner attempted a shot across the line but missed badly. In a swift motion, the ball found its way through the gap and crashed into the stumps instantly, leaving Warner stunned and Joseph celebrating a clean dismissal of the Aussie opener.

WI vs AUS Warm-up Match Highlights
Speaking about the warm-up match, the West Indies, after being invited to bat first, posted a mammoth total of 257/4 in 20 overs, thanks to quick fifties from their captain Rovman Powell 52 (25) and hard-hitting batter Nicholas Pooran 75 (25), against Australia. Johnson Charles and Sherfane Rutherford have each contributed 40+ scores to the West Indies’ target.
Chasing a target of 256, David Warner's early dismissal made the situation tough for Australia's uphill battle. Ashton Agar, stepping in unexpectedly as an opener, delivered a spirited performance, scoring 28 runs with some powerful hits before falling. Then, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh also failed with the bat, falling for 4 off 4 to Alzarri Joseph.
Josh Inglis (55) and Tim David (25) then took the spotlight, launching a counter-attack against the Windies bowlers. Their aggressive approach and hard-hitting saw them compile a brisk 63-run partnership. However, Gudakesh Motie managed to get rid of David, leaving Australia in danger.
Then, Matthew Wade’s 25-run knock and Nathan Ellis’ explosive cameo scored 39 runs off 22 balls towards the end, giving Australia a glimmer of hope. Adam Zampa also made 21*, but Australia fell short of 35 runs against the West Indies. However, Australia fought valiantly until the end despite batting with limited resources, but the Windies' bowlers outshined them.
