What Happened In Previous ICC Finals Between India And New Zealand?
Before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, India took on New Zealand in two ICC finals. The first one was the ICC Champions Trophy 2000 final, and the second one was the ICC World Test Championship 2021 final.
India and New Zealand clashed in the ICC Champions Trophy 2000 final on October 15, which was earlier known as the ICC KnockOut tournament. Batting first in the match, India, led by Sourav Ganguly, posted a good total of 264/6 in 50 overs, with Ganguly scoring a brilliant 117 runs and Sachin Tendulkar contributing with a crucial 69 runs.
Chasing the target, New Zealand got off to a poor start, but Chris Cairns played a knock for the ages, scoring an unbeaten 102 off 113 balls. He, along with Chris Harris (46), added 122 runs for the sixth wicket to take New Zealand to a 4-wicket victory.
Their next ICC final clash happened in 2021 in the ICC World Test Championship. The Rose Bowl in Southampton hosted the game from June 18 to 23, 2021 and it saw the Kiwis become the first-ever team to win the ICC World Test Championship title.
India batted first in the game that was disrupted by rain on multiple days. In the first innings, Virat Kohli's team was bowled out for 217 as Kyle Jamieson wreaked havoc, taking 5/31. Then, New Zealand responded with 249 runs, taking a crucial first-innings lead.
After that in the second innings, India displayed a disappointing performance as they posted only 170 runs on the board, with the New Zealand pacers showcasing sheer dominance
Chasing 139 for a historic win, New Zealand comfortably reached the target, losing only two wickets. Skipper Kane Williamson remained unbeaten on 52, while Ross Taylor finished with 47* as the Black Caps bagged an eight-wicket victory.
