Virat Kohli, on Sunday (November 5), equaled Sachin Tendulkar???s record of 49 ODI centuries as India thrashed South Africa by 243 runs to make it eight wins from eight in the ongoing ICC Men???s Cricket World Cup 2023.
With the former India captain celebrating his 35th birthday, the fans were expecting something special from him and he did not disappoint. He went on to play a sublime unbeaten knock of 101 runs on a tough Eden Gardens track to put India in the driver???s seat after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted toe bat first.
India made a quick start thanks to Rohit???s 24-ball 40 runs knock before losing his and Shubman Gill???s wicket in quick succession. Virat Kohli, however, did not let the Proteas make further inroads in the game. He shared a 134-run stand with Shreyas Iyer (77) for the third wicket before going on to complete his century and ensuring that India cross the 300-run mark.
India???s performance with the ball was equally impressive. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja blew the Proteas away by picking up a stunning five-wicket haul. He finished the game with figures of 5 for 33 while Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami took two wickets each as South Africa were bowled out for a paltry total of 83 runs.
