Yashasvi Jaiswal Run Out After KL Rahul Mix Up 1

Team India opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed in a bizarre run-out against Sri Lanka during the ongoing Test match. A terrible mix-up with KL Rahul, following a mid-pitch collision with bowler Keshara Nuwantha, ended Yashasvi Jaiswal’s promising innings when India was building a solid foundation.

Rahul and Jaiswal had put together a steady 47-run opening partnership on Day 1 (Saturday, August 15) in Galle. The unfortunate run-out forced Jaiswal to take a long walk back to the pavilion after scoring 32 runs off 37 deliveries. Devdutt Padikkal then joined KL Rahul to tackle the Sri Lankan spin attack.

Keshara Nuwantha bowled a full, flighted delivery that spun back into KL Rahul. KL Rahul neatly drove the ball toward wide mid-on and immediately called for a quick single. However, Keshara Nuwantha dived to his right to stop the ball, colliding with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jaiswal lost his footing and fell to the floor. KL Rahul had already sprinted halfway down the pitch. He returned back toward the same bowling crease.

With both Rahul and Jaiswal sprinting toward the non-striker’s end, Sri Lanka did a very easy run-out at the striker's end. Rahul managed to ground his bat just moments before Jaiswal crossed the line. Prabath Jayasuriya gathered the ball and threw it directly to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Run-Out Brings Back Unfortunate Memories

India have recovered well after the early setback, with Devdutt Padikkal taking the attack to the bowlers with an aggressive start. At the time of writing, the visitors are comfortably placed at 73/1 after 17 overs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had been run out twice before this latest dismissal in his Test career. His previous run-out also came after a communication error while he was closing in on a big score.

During the second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi last year, Jaiswal was approaching a double century when a mix-up with captain Shubman Gill ended his innings. Gill did not respond to Jaiswal's call for a quick single, resulting in his dismissal.

Jaiswal's first Test run-out also came after a mix-up, this time with Virat Kohli during the 2024 Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shubman Gill's Team India Win Toss, Opt To Bat First In 1st Test

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first in the opening Test against Sri Lanka. India have gone with two pacers and three spinners for the Galle Test.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, handed a Test debut to 25-year-old off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha. He impressed during the warm-up game for Sri Lanka Cricket XI, dismissing KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill.

The match also marks a major milestone for Indian cricket, as this is India's 600th Test. They become only the third team after England (1,097) and Australia (883) to reach the landmark.

India have won 186 of their previous 599 Tests, while losing 188, drawing 224, and tying one. Virat Kohli's India secured a dominant 304-run victory over Sri Lanka during their last Test in Galle in 2017.
