Team India’s newly-appointed head coach Rahul Dravid praised the new T20I skipper, Rohit Sharma, stating that the 34-year-old had the potential all along to grow into what he has become today.

Rohit took over the captaincy duties in T20Is from Virat Kohli, who had earlier announced that he would be stepping down from the role. Ahead of the new era in the shortest format, Dravid mentioned that he never thought he would be getting the chance to work with Rohit.

We all knew that Rohit was going to be special. We could just see that this was a very very special talent. Working with him after so many years is something that I never thought about or I never envisaged.

It’s just lovely to see the way Rohit has grown as a leader and as a person over the last 14 years or so. He’s truly been someone who has been an absolute credit to the game and the country,” Dravid was quoted as saying.

Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Mumbai Indians (MI) has won four IPL titles. He has thrived in the ODI and T20I format and has recently begun conquering the longest format of the game as well. With the number of expectations and burdens he carried coming from a state that is known for its cricketers, Rohit has done an amazing job as per Dravid.

From what he’s achieved, both as a player and his success as a leader for Mumbai Indians, it has been phenomenal as well. Having to carry the legacy of Mumbai cricket and Indian cricket forward is not an easy one, and he has done it with a lot of grace and class,” Dravid added further.

Rohit’s first assignment will be the 3-match T20I series against New Zealand starting on November 17. He has captained India before but never as the full-time captain.
