Australia National Cricket Team star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has issued a warning to the Big Bash League (BBL) ahead of the 2022-23 edition of the tournament.

The schedule for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23, which will be the 12th edition of Australia’s T20 competition, has already been announced by Cricket Australia (CA).

The T20 tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, with Sydney Thunder taking on the Melbourne Stars at the Manuka Oval, and the summit clash of the T20 league is all set to take place on February 4, 2022.

For the very first time in the history of the BBL, Cricket Australia introduced an IPL-style draft system to pick overseas players for the Big Bash League season 12. CA introduced the overseas player draft system to attract the big T20 names from around the globe and they succeeded in doing so as many international players registered themselves for the event and found a franchise as well.

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell has said that the local Australian players should be in the spotlight during the BBL. He also said that the T20 leagues are the way forward in cricket and people are going to see the IPL franchises take over the world cricket. Maxwell on the Vic State Cricket podcast said:

“I think the next step is making sure that our local players are taken care of because we are going to see these leagues take over at some stage. We are going to see the IPL teams, who have got their hands in different competitions around the world, we are going to see them take over. It could end up being a bit like (LIV) golf – I could see it sort of heading that way.”

Notably, the Indian Premier League franchises are dominating the global T20 franchise cricket as they have acquired teams in several different leagues like Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the International League T20 (ILT20), and SA20.

Glenn Maxwell further said that the Indian Premier League franchises are very powerful and warned BBL to be careful. He said:

“If the BBL is not careful, it could get overrun by the amount of cricket that’s going on around the world and it’s going to be hard to compete with because the IPL teams are just so powerful.”

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell, who suffered a broken leg in a freak accident, is unlikely to take part in the upcoming BBL, where he represents the Melbourne Stars. Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch, while talking about Maxwell’s injury, said:

“Glenn is obviously a huge part of the Melbourne Stars and we wish him well in his recovery.

“He will continue to be a key part of the club during the start of the season as he works his way back to full fitness and we look forward to seeing him soon.”
