India National Cricket Team suffered a disappointing 184-run loss in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. It was a horrible effort from the visitors, especially with the bat as they had all the opportunity to save the match and even go for a win.

India fail with bat and ball at MCG

Apart from the Jasprit Bumrah, bowlers had a tough outing with the ball with Australia putting a massive total of 474 runs. With the bat, India were poor as only Yashasvi Jaiswal (84), Nitish Kumar Reddy (114), and Washington Sundar (50) batted well as the Rohit Sharma-led side posted 369 runs, conceding the lead of 105 runs in the first innings.

India were magnificent with the ball in the second innings initially, as they left Australia tottering at 91/6. But after that order contributions powered the Pat Cummins-led side to a total of 234 runs, setting a massive total of 340 runs on the board.

India had a horrible outing in the chase as, apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal (84) and Rishabh Pant (30), no batter could go past the 10-run mark, which speaks a lot. Even though India had a wicketless session post-lunch, they still went on to lose the game by a massive margin.

We wanted to fight till the end, and unfortunately, we couldn't do it - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma admitted that the result was disappointing for them but claimed that they went with the intent of winning and fought till the very end. The skipper also said that they had their chances but they didn't take them. He also talked about the situation when they reduced Australia to 91/6. Speaking after the match, he explained:

"It is pretty disappointing. It's not that we went in with the intent of giving up the fight. We wanted to fight till the end, and unfortunately, we couldn't do it. It'll be tough to assess just the last two sessions. If you look at the overall Test match, we had our chances, but we didn't take them. We had Australia 90 for 6.

"We know things can get tough, but we want to play tough cricket from hard situations. I don't want to look at one situation. We were not good enough. I went back to my room and thought about what else we could have done as a team, but we threw everything we had, but they fought hard, especially that last-wicket partnership, which probably cost us the game there," said Rohit Sharma.

We tried to set a platform and keep wickets in hand for the last two sessions, but they bowled perfectly as well - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma talked about the cricket Team played in the last sessions and added that they failed to set the platform to chase the target. The India captain also lauded Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jasprit Bumrah for their efforts in the match. He explained:

"We knew 340 wasn't going to be easy. We tried to set a platform and keep wickets in hand for the last two sessions, but they bowled perfectly as well. We wanted to go for the target, but we didn't set the platform from our side. There are ways to win games and we fell short in finding ways to win games. [On NKR:] He's coming here for the first time, these conditions can get really tough, but he showed great character, solid technique as well.

"He's got everything to be successful at this level, I hope he goes from strength to strength, and he's got all the backing from the team as well. On Bumrah:] Absolutely brillaint, we ve been watching him for so many years now, coming here and getting the job done. He's not a statistical person, he just wants to play for the country and do well for the team, but unfortunately, he's not got a lot of support from the other side," Rohit Sharma concluded.
