West Indies and IPL go back a long way. Since 2008, several reputed T20 cricketers have played in the IPL. Starting from Chris Gayle to Kieron Pollard to Dwayne Bravo, these three have been the biggest matchwinners in the league.
Andre Russell and Sunil Narine have been matchwinners for the Kolkata Knight Riders and have played a big role in their success over the years. In recent years, Nicholas Pooran has been one cricketer from the Caribbean who has played in the last few seasons consistently.
In the recent meeting between the IPL franchises and the BCCI the team owners came up with several important pointers. All of them were discussed and debated about.
The BCCI in response have said that they will come back with a response by the end of August 2025 and confirm the number of retentions. Meanwhile, in this article, we pick five West Indies cricketers who can retire from T20s if not picked in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Jason Holder
Holder last played in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023. He has never been given a longer run in the IPL by any of the franchises he has played for. He was even ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2024 due to injury concerns.
His getting ruled out of the T20 World Cup has diminished his chances of getting rebought by any of the franchises in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Alzarri Joseph
Joseph had an expensive stint in IPL 2024 with RCB. He picked up just one wicket in the three matches that he played and fell out of favor from the selection. He did play in the T20 World Cup 2024 but could not make impactful performances.
Joseph does not have good T20I numbers which might deter the teams from adding him to their squad for the next season.
Shai Hope
Hope is a technically correct batsman. He is made for Test and ODI cricket. T20 cricket is not his game and that was proved in the few matches that he played for Delhi Capitals last season. He scored just 183 runs in nine matches at an average of just 22.
He is a much better batsman in the other two formats and can consider retiring from T20 cricket if he is not picked in the mega auction next year.
Rovman Powell
The West Indies T20I skipper played for the Rajasthan Royals last year but could not make the most of it. He had a chance to win a few games for the side potentially with the bat but he could not.
He could not win the T20 World Cup as captain of West Indies as well in the ICC event earlier this year. If he is indeed not selected for the IPL next year, he might well consider retiring from the format.
Akeal Hosein
Strangely Hosein was benched throughout the IPL 2024 after they roped him in in the mini auction last year.
The talented spinner from West Indies did not find a spot in the XI despite being one of the best spinners in the format. He plays across all franchise cricket leagues but is unlikely to be bought in the next IPL auction too.
