Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has openly exposed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a security breach during the ongoing Champions Trophy. Gavaskar backed the government of India which didn't give Indian team the permission to travel to Pakistan.

During the match between Afghanistan and England, security was breached when a person barged into the ground to meet the Afghan players. A similar incident happened during the match between New Zealand and Bangladesh when a fan stepped inside the playing area to meet Rachin Ravindra.

Sunil Gavaskar is clearly unhappy to see the security being breached a no. of times during the tournament. He reminded the PCB of lapses in such a high-profile tournament, which is also the first ICC event in Pakistan in 29 years.

While speaking on Sports Today, Sunil Gavaskar recalled how the security was breached during the match between Afghanistan and England at Lahore. He further backed the decision of the Indian government not to give the team the required permission to come to Pakistan.

"Even in this tournament we say that people were able to breach security and run onto the ground while the match was going on. I think it happened during the Afghanistan game. When you see such incidents, it is almost impossible for any government to give the Indian team the permission to travel to Pakistan," said Gavaskar.

It would have been a difficult task to handle the security of Team India had they travelled to Pakistan. The Indian team has a huge fan following in Pakistan which would have made it difficult for the security officials to control the local crowd.

Sunil Gavaskar on India-Pakistan cricket

Sunil Gavaskar was earlier asked about his views on the resumption of India-Pakistan cricket in the future. He stood clear in his stance that there must be peace at the borders to start bilateral cricket between these two countries again.

"It's very simple. If there's peace at the borders, then I think both governments will certainly say, 'Look, okay, we've had no incidents, nothing at all. So let's at least start talking'," Gavaskar had said on Pakistan's local TV show 'Dressing Room'.

"I'm pretty certain there will be some back-channel connections going on. But you want to see what's happening both on the ground and off the ground because there are incursions we hear about. That's the reason why the Indian government is saying, 'Look, maybe until all that stops, we should not even look at having or talking about anything'," he further added.

India and Pakistan haven't played bilateral cricket with each other for more than a decade now. The last time these two sides played a bilateral series was in 2013 when Pakistan visited India for a two-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series.

Why is India playing in Dubai?

While all the teams in the ongoing Champions Trophy are playing in Pakistan, India are playing in Dubai. The Indian government denied the BCCI to send their team to Pakistan which prompted the ICC to hold the tournament in a hybrid model.

The decision was protested by the PCB earlier but they had no other option to accept it eventually. Even in the ICC events happening in India in the future, Pakistan will play their matches in a neutral venue and won't be needed to travel to India.
