Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his experience of working with Ravi Shastri. He got scolded by the former India head coach for sharing secrets with the media. Ravichandran Ashwin explained his bowling method during a post-match interview.

Speaking on the Star Sports show, #CheekySingles, Ashwin revealed that once Ravi Shastri gave him a death stare for spilling out the secrets of the India National Cricket Team during the India vs England Test match in 2018. He realized that discussing the technical aspects of his bowling in the media was a mistake.
"I was playing a Test match in Birmingham and bowled Alastair Cook. After the match, I was giving an interview and explained how the ball comes out of my hand. When I returned, Ravi bhai was staring at me in the dressing room. I thought, "I bowled well, didn't I?"
"Then he [Ravi Shastri] said, "Why are you sharing all the secrets?" I got scared. [Laughs] Honestly, that's when I realized I shouldn't have shared those details. I had never felt that way before, but looking back, I understood that explaining what I had bowled and how I did it was a mistake."

Ravichandran Ashwin's career
Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket on December 18, 2024, and subsequently retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 27, 2025. He stepped away from international play as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test history and has since pursued playing in overseas franchise leagues.
He has 537 wickets in 106 Tests, making him India's second-highest Test wicket-taker of all-time behind only Anil Kumble. Across all international formats, he claimed 765 wickets. He was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning side as well and also won the 2013 Champions Trophy with India.

Ravichandran Ashwin also revealed that he was not an off-spinner at the start, and he was a medium pacer. Watching Piyush Chawla bowl, he turned into a spinner.
Ashwin said, "I wasn't even a spinner then. I was a medium-pacer who could bat a bit. We even played together for India Under-17, and at that time I was still a batter. Then, after watching Piyush bowl, I got motivated to take up spin bowling."
Piyush Chawla replied to Ashwin's statement, "That's generous of him to say. I actually started as a batter because, as kids, who wants to bowl? Everyone wants to bat. I played for Uttar Pradesh as a batter until the Under-16 level and bowled part-time leg-spin. Tanmay, who is now an umpire, was my captain in the IPL. When the team wasn't getting wickets."
