Jasprit Bumrah in the Asian Games 2026, that’s a surprising call made by the BCCI selectors. For the Asian Games 2026, teams mostly prefer to send their reserve group of players. In the previous season, BCCI, too, sent a bunch of emerging players for the tournament, and that proved enough to claim the gold medal.
It was expected to see a mix of young and experienced players to take part in this year’s Asian Games. But the Ajit Agarkar-led panel seems to have different thoughts. Prioritising the tournament, they have named a full-fledged team for the event.
An all-star team for the Asian Games 2026
Bumrah, who mostly plays in high-edge contests, is also set to play the Asian Games. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the only emerging batter in the team who is capable to single handedly cause myhem in the Twenty20 format.
A few days ago, BCCI released a 30-member extended list of players for the event. The 30-member long list had several emerging players like Anukul Roy, Ayush Badon, Vipraj Nigam, Yash Thakur, Harsh Dubey, and Sooryavanshi. It is sure that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had thoughts about creating a team with multiple budding talents, and with those who have experienced but barely get an opportunity to represent the country.
From there, almost taking a 180-degree turn, the selectors named an all-star team, led by Shreyas Iyer, supported by Tilak Varma, the vice captain of the T20I squad.

Why does BCCI send a full-strength Team India for the event?
But why did the selectors change their minds? There is no official statement regarding this, but there is a certain theory that is related to Pakistan.
Pakistan will be there in the Asian Games 2026 to face India. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by Mohsin Naqvi, can send a strong team to the event to claim the title. Team India is the defending champion, so by any means, they will not want to let the title go. Basically, BCCI does not want to take any risk during their title defence.
BCCI set to crash Pakistan in Asian Games
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India did not want to take any risk of losing to Pakistan in the Asian Games, so the entire long list was changed, and a strong team is being sent to the Asian Games. Pakistan was trying to give India a tough fight there by sending a strong team to the Asian Games," Abhishek Tripathi, a Dainik Jagran reporter, mentions in his 'X' post.
"Usually, second-tier teams have been sent to the Asian Games, but with cricket's inclusion in the Olympics and the opportunity to thrash Pakistan again there in mind, the decision was made to send a strong team there,” it further reads.
