WI vs IRE: "We Have Disappointed Our Fans And Ourselves" - Nicholas Pooran After Ireland Thrash West Indies To Qualify For Super 12

After his side’s elimination from the T20 World Cup on Friday following a humiliating loss to Ireland, West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran voiced his displeasure and remarked that the squad had let down its supporters. 

The skipper also mentioned his poor World Cup batting performance and expressed his extreme sadness over West Indies’ elimination. 

Nicholas Pooran Disappointed By Team’s Batting Performance

“We have disappointed our fans and ourselves. It’s definitely hurting. I have disappointed my guys with the way I performed,” said Nicholas Pooran after the match.  

He added his thoughts about the team’s dismal World Cup batting performance. According to Nicholas Pooran, the pitch was favorable for batting and the score was never high enough for the bowlers to successfully defend. 

“It’s tough, we haven’t batted well in this tournament at all. On a really good batting surface, making 145, it’s a really difficult task for the bowlers. It was going to be a challenge,” mentioned the left-hander.  

The captain Nicholas Pooran also congratulated the Irish squad on making it to the Super 12.

“Congratulations to Ireland, they batted fantastically and bowled well today. There are a lot of positives, Jason is back to bowling well, King is batting wonderfully, and Joseph is stepping up with the ball for us. This is a learning experience for us.” 

Ireland Openers Blow Away West Indies Hopes

The West Indies were eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2022 by explosive batsman Paul Stirling, who continued to be undefeated. Stirling scored 66 runs off of 48 deliveries to win the match.  

Ireland, who was chasing the aim, went all out early and scored 64 runs from their powerplay overs. When Ireland batted first, Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie developed a like to the West Indian bowlers, who pounded them mercilessly. 

After giving up 16 runs in his first over, Akeal Hosein returned in the eighth over to remove Irish captain Balbirnie for 37 runs off of 23 balls. Before returning to the pavilion, the hitter ensured that his team got off to a strong start by putting up a 73-run first-wicket partnership. 

In the entire inning, West Indies were only able to claim the wicket of the Ireland skipper. 

At number three, Lorcan Tucker entered the fray and proceeded to dissect the West Indian bowlers in the same manner as his skipper. Sterling kept on having a good time and reached his fifty-first run in the 12th over off just 32 balls. 

Odean Smith caught Tucker in the same over, but the call was reversed because Smith had overstepped, allowing the batter a break. The West Indies’ situation grew worse as both of their batters tried to score easily and made sure that they never recovered in the game. 

Ireland crossed the finish line thanks to the batting pairing of Stirling and Tucker, who put up a 77-run partnership. 

West Indies chose to bat first in the game and put up a middling total in the first inning. The only batter to put forth effort at the plate was Brandon King, who scored 62 runs without being defeated. Gareth Delany won “Player of the Match” after taking three wickets for Ireland and only allowing 16 runs.
