Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ignited the debate with his sensational statement on Virat Kohli's underwhelming performance in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where the batting icon has yet to shine despite coming on the back of a stellar IPL 2024 season.

With scores of one, four, and zero, Kohli's inability to deliver as an Indian opener on the grandest stage has raised many eyebrows. The dashing right-hander is known as the chase master, but he has unexpectedly faltered on the tricky pitches of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Ravichandran Ashwin calls for major batting order shake-up amid Virat Kohli's ICC T20 World Cup 2024 woes

The pressure is mounting on Kohli as the Indian cricket team gears up to face Afghanistan in their first Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday, June 20, at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. As Kohli failed to deliver as an opener for the Men in Blue, Ashwin expressed concern over the former Indian skipper’s form in the ongoing mega ICC event.

The veteran spinner came forward to suggest potential changes to India’s batting lineup for the crucial Super-8 clash with the Afghanistan cricket team in Barbados. He claimed that even Kohli would himself ask the team management to allow him to bat at No. 3 to show his true colors.

Actually, Ashwin believes that Kohli should bat at his usual position at No. 3 in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Ashwin said that there is no point in damaging Kohli's confidence, and for which India can open with Rishabh Pant or bring Yashasvi Jaiswal into the playing XI. Notably, Pant has been batting at the number three in the tournament.

However, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner remained optimistic about Kohli's ability to bounce back strongly with the bat, but he felt dropping him down to No. 3 might help the batting maestro blaze all guns for Team India in the crucial phase of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean Islands.

There is no chance to damage Virat Kohli's confidence: Ashwin

With India’s Super-8 matches against Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia on the horizon, all eyes will be on Kohli to see if he can prove his worth as India's premier batter and lead the team to victory in the tournament. Given that Ashwin believes that a demotion in his batting position will motivate Kohli to prove his worth and silence his critics with his batting prowess.

Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel: “There is no chance for a player like Virat Kohli to damage his confidence. He will say, 'you brought me down to number 3, I will show you who I am.'. That's how he will bat, first of all. I am saying this because I know him.”

In the same video, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa said that Kohli’s body language looked confident despite his struggles in the tournament. Uthappa noted, “Virat Kohli's physiology, after the previous match, I saw a glimpse of it. Maybe five seconds. Him interacting with some of the players and talking to the support staff. When you see his physiology, you can tell that man is exuding supreme confidence. And that comes from a place of knowing about his own game and the confidence in his own ability. So, he knows that this is just a blip in the radar.”
