Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has made a massive revelation regarding his vision for the national cricket team. After recently guiding the national team to the T20 World Cup 2026 victory, Gambhir stated that winning an Olympic medal holds much more value and importance than lifting a World Cup trophy.

India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday to win their third T20 World Cup title. The Men in Blue have been an absolutely unstoppable force in white-ball formats. Notably, the Indian team will be hoping to secure a medal in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

My Entire Focus Is On That - Gautam Gambhir Reveals His Vision

During an exclusive interview with Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir shared his views regarding his coaching tenure. When asked about his thoughts on leading the Indian cricket team to an Olympic medal in 2028, the head coach stated that his current focus is on the upcoming bilateral series.

"Even during my playing days, I never thought that far ahead. That is still very distant. For me, every series matters. I will continue as long as I can perform well. The next series is against Afghanistan, followed by a tour of Sri Lanka. My entire focus is on that," Gambhir said.

"To be honest, I haven't even thought about the ODI World Cup yet—that is still a year and a half away. The Olympics come after that. If there is someone better than me who can lead the Indian team to victory, they should be coaching. If I am the best fit, then I should do it," he added.

The Entire World Participates In The Olympics - Gautam Gambhir

During the same conversation, Gautam Gambhir said that securing a gold medal at the multi-sport event commands more respect than winning a cricket tournament featuring limited teams.

"You’re right. I believe an Olympic medal is as important as a T20 World Cup—perhaps even bigger. I feel that while the T20 World Cup features 20 teams, the entire world participates in the Olympics. Winning there commands the same, if not more, respect than winning a World Cup," Gambhir stated.

Team India's Mixed Results Across Formats Under Gautam Gambhir

Under Gautam Gambhir, the Indian men's team has broken multiple records in limited-overs cricket. They became the first host nation to defend the T20 World Cup crown. Sanju Samson and Jasprit Bumrah played crucial match-winning roles in the Ahmedabad final.

It is worth mentioning that the Men in Blue also won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup last year. However, despite their massive white-ball success, India's recent decline in red-ball cricket remains a major concern for the management.

Under Gambhir's coaching tenure, the team faced tough defeats against New Zealand and South Africa, lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), and failed to secure a spot in the World Test Championship Final.
