India suffered an early setback in their chase of 195 against Afghanistan in the first ODI at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala after former skipper Rohit Sharma was run out following a costly misunderstanding with opening partner Shubman Gill.
The veteran opener looked in good touch after suffering an injury scare during his brief stay at the crease, striking two boundaries and a six while helping India make a positive start. However, a communication breakdown between the two batters brought an abrupt end to Rohit's innings and handed Afghanistan a crucial breakthrough at a stage when India appeared to be in complete control of the chase.
Rohit Sharma reacts angrily to costly run-out after Shubman Gill confusion
The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the sixth over with India cruising at 46 without loss. Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar delivered a length ball outside off stump, which Rohit gently pushed towards the left of midwicket. Spotting a quick single, Rohit immediately set off from the striker's end and was already halfway down the pitch.
However, Gill found himself blocked by the bowler's follow-through and hesitated before responding. By the time he signalled Rohit to return, the former India captain was too far down the pitch.
Rashid Khan reacted quickly in the field and collected the ball before firing a throw towards wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The Afghanistan keeper removed the bails in a flash as Rohit desperately tried to make his ground with a full-length dive.
Although the umpires referred the decision upstairs, Rohit had already started walking back to the dressing room. Replays confirmed he was comfortably short of his crease when the stumps were broken. The dismissal ended Rohit's innings on 16 runs off 16 balls, an effort that included two fours and one six.
What attracted attention immediately afterwards was Rohit's reaction. The opener appeared visibly unhappy with the misunderstanding and walked back without looking towards Gill, highlighting his frustration at throwing away his wicket in such a manner.
The run-out was particularly unusual because Rohit Sharma has rarely been dismissed in such fashion throughout his career. In fact, this was only the second time he had been run out in the last three years across international cricket, with both instances coming against Afghanistan in 2024 and 2026.
It also marked Rohit's first run-out in ODI cricket since 2019 against the West Indies, ending a seven-year streak without such a dismissal in the format. Interestingly, Shubman Gill has now been at the non-striker's end for two of Rohit's run-outs, placing him alongside MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina on the list, while only Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan have been involved more often with three instances each.

Rohit Sharma completes 16,000 runs as an opener in international cricket
Despite his disappointing dismissal, Rohit Sharma achieved a major personal milestone during the innings. The former India captain became only the second Indian opener and the seventh batter overall to complete 16,000 international runs as an opener.
The landmark further strengthens Rohit Sharma's position among the greatest opening batters in cricket history. Over the last decade, he has established himself as one of the most dominant players at the top of the order across formats, combining consistency with an ability to score at a rapid pace.
Rohit now sits just 119 runs behind Virender Sehwag, who remains India's leading run-scorer as an opener in international cricket. Given his continued presence in India's ODI plans, Rohit could soon move to the top of the list.
