Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist made a shocking statement on Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the first Test against England. Gilchrist recalled Jaiswal’s fiery verbal exchange with Mitchell Starc during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and he quipped, “Every dog has his day.”
The exchange between Jaiswal and Starc took place during the second innings of the first Test in Perth. Jaiswal, who was well-set at the crease, taunted the Australian pacer by saying, “It’s coming too slow.” The opener scored 161 off 297 balls, playing a pivotal role in India’s emphatic 295-run victory.
However, Australia bounced back strongly after the initial setback, winning three of the remaining four Tests to clinch the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Is the Next Big Superstar - Adam Gilchrist
Speaking to Sports Yaari, Adam Gilchrist described Yashasvi Jaiswal as the next big superstar who has shown maturity and the ability to perform under pressure. Gilchrist called the exchange between Jaiswal and Starc “good, honest banter.”
"I think, Jaiswal (is the next big superstar). He has shown us… he had a little period of having to learn a bit more, dig in deeper, but I sense that he handles it. It's (Starc vs Jaiswal) just good banter. Every dog has his day, and that day was his. Well and truly," Gilchrist said (via Hindustan Times).
"He dominated us in that Test match in that second innings, and Starc brought it back a little bit later on. That's the beauty of the game. But that was just good, honest banter," he added.
Jaiswal impressed on his maiden Test tour of Australia. The 23-year-old scored 391 runs across five matches at an average of over 43, including a century and two fifties. He was India’s leading run-getter in the series.
I Didn’t Actually Hear Him Say I Bowled Too Slow - Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc spoke about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 'too slow' remark following the Perth Test. Starc said that he hadn’t actually heard the comment during the match.
Starc and Jaiswal were involved in several competitive duels. The pacer ended the five-match series with an impressive haul of 18 wickets at an average of 28.66.
"I didn't actually hear him say I bowled too slow. I don't say too much to people these days. I may have been back in the day, but now I just sort of get on with it," Starc told Cricket.au (via Hindustan Times).
Yashasvi Jaiswal Set to Feature in Upcoming England Test Series
Yashasvi Jaiswal has become a key player across all formats for India. After making his Test debut in July 2023, he cemented his place in the squad. He has played just one ODI, making his debut against England in February 2025. Jaiswal is expected to feature more regularly in the 50-over format.
The left-handed batter will next be seen in action during the five-match Test series in England. As per the schedule, the opening match is set to begin on Friday, June 20, at Headingley in Leeds. He is likely to open the innings alongside KL Rahul. The Shubman Gill-led team will be hoping Jaiswal delivers.
